For context

The pieces I make are for real kenjutsu training, not costumes or cosplay. My work is rooted in respectful study and use (informed by my own training in classical Samurai martial arts) and is intended to support other practitioners with thoughtfully constructed, high-quality gear meant to move, breathe, and hold up in practice.

While I happily make custom gear within that martial arts context, I don’t take commissions for decorative or theatrical garments. If that’s what you’re after, I’m happy to redirect you to Folkwear patterns and Etsy, where you’ll find skilled makers who specialize in that work.

As a white settler maker working with traditional Japanese forms, I do my best to approach this craft with respect and care by learning from my teachers, listening to the community I train with, and keeping cultural awareness at the center of my business ethics.

Orders & customization

All garments that are made to order will have a typical turnaround of 3 to 6 weeks depending on the piece and current queue. I'll do my best to keep you updated along the way.

Customization details are confirmed before I cut anything; once the fabric is cut, we're committed to the big decisions. Small adjustments along the way are usually fine. I'm not able to accommodate multiple rounds of edits or changed decisions, so when in doubt, ask early and we'll find a good solution together.

I'm easy to work with and want you to love what you get. That works best when we're both being straightforward and communicative with each other from the start.

Shipping

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on actual carrier rates. Domestic orders only for now. If you have questions about your order's shipment, please reach out.

Repairs & alterations

I stand behind the quality of my work and aim to choose quality natural fibers that are physically and ethically sturdy. That said, even the best fabrics eventually wear out and threads will break. I send each garment out with a little extra material so that you're able to patch your own gear. And I will happily repair, patch, reinforce, or adjust the items I make throughout the garment’s lifespan, within reason; or I will offer my best advice in order for you to take it to a local sewist or diy.

Right to refuse service

I reserve the right to decline an order at any point in its fulfillment if I'm not being treated with basic kindness and respect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please use the contact form or reach me at megthetailor@proton.me  if your question isn’t answered here.

If you have a beloved piece that fits the way you like, taking measurements of that will be the most helpful.

Keikogi: height and chest or waist, whichever is the larger number. If you know how long you prefer it from shoulder to hem, let me know.

Hakama: height and waist or hips circumference, depending where you like your hakama to sit on your body. If you know your preferred length from waist band to hem, that's helpful to know.

Obi: hips circumference

Times are especially hard, and I’ve dealt with financial insecurity much of my life. My hope is to keep this gear accessible for everyone in our community. Your help means I can offer a better sliding scale to folks who need it while still covering the cost of materials and studio overhead. The pool is held like a commission deposit that we can tap into on top of whatever studio discount I’m able to give.

One-time contributions can be added to your order on the shop page. Recurring monthly contributions can be accessed on my Ko-fi page.

If you need a reduced price in order to make it work, let’s talk.

Non-uniform clothing: not at this time, but thanks for thinking of me.

Dojo gear repairs and alterations: yes, on a case-by-case basis. Email me your questions via the contact form and attach any pictures that help show the repair you're looking for.

Other non kenjustu-related commissions: I’m unlikely to have space on my work bench the next several months, but you’re welcome to contact me with the details and I’ll add you to my waitlist if it’s something I can help you with.

  • Share pics, a link, or the MtT instagram page with your dojo mates
  • Send me your old (clean) gear to take apart, study for patterning, or upcycle. Or keep your eye out at thrift stores or estate sales for good quality, inexpensive bulk cotton, linen, or canvas, etc.
  • Contribute to the community gear fund so together we can support new comrades and those facing financial hardship
  • Become a supporter on Ko-fi so I can upgrade equipment, buy the materials you particularly want to see become gear, eventually expand into a larger studio space to make more, or buy the occasional coffee after training with my dojo mates.

If you have questions I haven't covered here or in the product listings, please don't hesitate to let me know
