Kaku Obi (Custom, Made to Order)

$88.00

These obi are one of the first things my dojo mates asked if I could re-create in 2023, and we’ve gone through several rounds of prototyping and feedback to land here. They hold up well to real training, fit a broad range of bodies, and get better with every wash (or superstitious patina of perspiration, if that’s your vibe.)

Each obi is cut and sewn by me from 100% cotton duck canvas, organic cotton canvas, or other salvaged natural fibers. They will soften with wear while keeping their structure—the heavier duck canvas starts stiffer and stays relatively solid; the lighter weights are more flexible right out of the gate.

5 lines of stitching stabilize the material to avoid twisting or bunching in the wash. Thinner materials may have a stabilizer layer or cotton batting between the top and bottom layers to maintain structure.

Length is made to order, so if finding a long enough obi has been a problem, I’ve got you covered. If you need a custom width, leave a note during checkout.

Dimensions

Width: 3.75-4” is standard

Lengths: 12–16 ft (13-14 ft is industry standard)

Finding your length: (your hip circumference × 3) + 24 to 36 inches for tying. Not sure? Send me your hips measurement and I'll help you figure it out.

Customization options:

  • Length and width (select your length or add your measurements to the notes box when you click ‘Add to Cart’)

  • Fabric

  • Thread color requests

Have a request not listed? Just message me; I'm often able to work something out or offer alternatives.

Take $10 off when bundled with a gi, hakama, or nobokama. Add it to your order from the customizations menu on those products, and in the note, specify the length and fabric.

Materials: 100% cotton duck canvas, salvaged cottons and blends. Often pre-washed, or with a low shrink rate of 2–5%.

Care: for the best lifespan of natural fibers use cold/cool wash, low heat tumble or hang dry, and iron as needed.
