Nobokama (Custom, Made to Order)
The hakama's more agile sibling: narrower silhouette, less volume, and same ease of movement as loose-fit trousers.
I adapted this pattern after meeting a practitioner at a seminar whose nobokama I admired so much I asked if I could take pictures and study it. As a martial arts newbie, I hadn’t seen one before. He agreed, and shared that the company that originally made them had closed and he hadn’t been able to find a suitable replacement. Re-creating this garment feels like a small way of helping to preserve aspects of the history of this lineage.
I wear mine to almost every training session. The reduced volume makes a real difference for rolls and groundwork, and I think makes it easier for my teacher to assess and adjust my movements.
These are made to order and built for your body. Length, fabric, thread color, and certain construction details are all adjustable. If you have specific needs around fit, mobility, or body accommodation, please ask.
Customization options (specify in the ‘add to cart’ notes section):
Desired length (bottom edge of waistband to hem)
Hips circumference (or waist, if worn higher)
Himo (straps) custom length (default is ~175” front, ~74” back w/ 2-4 lines chain stitching)
Koshita adjustment (raise, lower, width, no koshita)
Longer or shorter side vents
Optional Add-ons:
Hanger Straps - $10
Save $10 on an obi when you bundle it with a hakama, gi, or nobokama pre-order. Specify length+fabric on the Custom Obi page, and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout.
